I guess every country has it's little absurdities, and that's one of the many reasons why I liked this book - because it gives me, as a British person, a new view of another country and it's histories. I really hope that more of Wolfgang Herrndorf's books will made available in English (I'm afraid my German is nowhere as good as your English) as I'd definitely like to read more. I think it's easy for us in the UK to hold John Green's writing on a high pedestal as there doesn't seem to be very many UK YA writers who are publishing writing at his level - or, at least, at the level of his writing in The Fault in Our Stars - but there are certainly lots of writers out there who do write at the same level - or higher. I think it's just a question of discovering them - and Herrndorf, for me at least, definitely falls into this category. A German friend of mine actually recommended Tschick to me, so when I saw the English translation I snapped it up.Isabelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11348453632744603446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3625674892357757747.post-66461997240927514502014-05-03T17:08:47.681-07:002014-05-03T17:08:47.681-07:00Very nice review! Some of the things you mentioned, especially the absurdities one might encounter in former East Germany, played a totally different role for me, because, although living in an other part of Germany, it was totally normal for me to read about them. As a german, you just... know there are a little weird things over there. <br />The comparison with John Green was originally what brought me here, because- believe it or not- I googled "john green vs wolfgang herrndorf". You're certainly not the only one who's noticed parallels to the works of John Green, and I was trying to find a comparison between them. A review of "Tschick" (that's the original german name of the book) was not what I was hoping to find, but I ended up enjoing it. (By the way, I prefer Wolfgang Herrndorf over John Green personally for various reasons, although he can be very hard to read.)"john green vs wolfgang herrndorf"https://www.blogger.com/profile/01748046380572723399noreply@blogger.com
